SVEC is a high-volume combination EMS organization charged with the mission of providing emergency medical response to the citizens of the city of Petersburg. Our providers operate out of our main station which houses administration, operations, and support divisions.

SVEC employees enjoy a flexible rotating schedule and our volunteers work in tandem with our career staff.  In addition to providing emergency response, members support and work closely with the Petersburg Fire Department and Petersburg Bureau of Police providing standby services, community engagement, and cross-department special operations.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers at SVEC are essential to our core mission and get to work beside our talented career staff.  Volunteers staff ambulances, participate in training, attend meetings and drills, and help with community events.  To be a volunteer with SVEC, you must be a minimum of 16 years of age or older and have a desire to help others and serve your community.  Ideal volunteers possess strong personal values, integrity, and a desire to grow personally and professionally in the field of Emergency Medical Services. To learn more and express interest in volunteer membership, please view the volunteer position posting below.

Career Opportunities

SVEC employs actively certified and experienced EMS providers to provide emergency response, rescue services, and care of the sick and injured.  We offer part and full-time opportunities and full-time employees are eligible for a benefits package to include medical, dental, vision, and Aflac Supplemental.  Candidates for career positions must be certified, at minimum, at the BLS level and have previous 911 experience.

Resumes for career providers are accepted continually.  Active recruitment for open positions will have a position-specific job posting listed above.  If we are not actively recruiting, you may still submit your resume to be placed in our candidate pool for future openings.

Intern Opportunities

Having a high call volume, high acuity illnesses, and progressive protocols makes SVEC a prime agency for BLS & ALS students.  SVEC works in partnership with many local high schools, colleges, and university programs where EMS students can complete their clinical field hours and mandatory patient contacts.  Interested students must be actively enrolled in an EMS certification program partnered with us and approved by the Virginia Office of EMS and be in good standing with the program’s clinical standards for field operations.

If you are an EMS student and would like to participate in SVEC’s Intern program, contact your Program Director or Clinical Coordinator.  If you are a student participating in a re-entry program or need to complete clinical hours outside of a certification program, visit our “Contact Us” page and submit an inquiry.
